I love blues rock, but I really want to get into the original blues more. I’m talking people like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy. Which artists should I look for, and any recommended and essential albums? Thanks in advanvce.

John Lee Hooker , The Country Blues of John Lee Hooker or Burning Hell
Lonnie Johnson with Elmer Snowden , Blues and Ballads
Memphis Slim, All Kinds of Blues
Blind Willy McTell, Last Season
Rev Gary Davis, A Little More Faith
Lightnin Hopkins, The Swarthmore Concert

A really good place to get your feet wet would be:

Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues a Musical Journey

It is a five disc set which will give you a good cross-section of blues from 1920 to about 2000

Not exhaustive by any stretch of the imagination, but a great place to start.

Son House is one of the greatest bluesmen of all time, also there is a song called "Dark was the night, cold was the ground" by "Blind Willie Johnson" which (in my opinion) is the definition of "Blues music".
Also you should definitly check out the Martin Scorsece film about the blues :D
