What piece of Classical music really lifts you when you are down?

March 31st, 2010 admin 32 comments

Now Classical music can be relaxing, thought provoking or invigorating.

What is the piece of music that really lifts you up when you are down?

For me it is a) Beethoven’s 7th Symphony (especially first movement) b.) Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute.

Thoughts?

You can go to That CD shop located at Great World City, River Valley Road Or Pacific Plaza located at Orchard. However I must say that shop does sell exclusive kind of music but the prices of the cd are considered costly.

What classical music has the sound of bells ringing in it?

March 27th, 2010 admin 10 comments

We are looking for a slow song, classical without vocal, that has bells ringing in it. Preferably chime-like bells, but ‘church-type’ bells are ok also. And please, no Christmas music! This is for a wedding.

Tubular Bells.

What are the best classical music torrent sites?

March 25th, 2010 admin 2 comments

It seems like most torrent sites have a classical music category, but there is huge overlap between them, and most are not well-seeded.

Anyone know of good torrent sites for classical music, preferable in lossless (FLAC) format?

Hello…

What do you think of mixing classical music with pop music together?

March 23rd, 2010 admin 8 comments

I like different kinds of music. And I listened to Vanessa-Mae and Maksim Mrvica a few days ago. I think it’s a great way to use modern rhythms, noisy drums and guitars in classical music. What do you reckon?
Thank you for listening!

Up until the advent of modernism, where music became unintelligible to the average Joe, there was no difference between the two. Gershwin successfully straddled the line. Paul McCartney is trying to. Frank Zappa waded through both waters. Brain Eno ( of David Bowie circle) has some successful works considered classical.
Music is music, labels are as constrictive on it as on people.

How can I learn classical music on a guitar?

March 21st, 2010 admin 4 comments

I want to learn to play classical music on the guitar, but I am afraid I don’t know where to start. An instructor is not really an option at this moment, however any books, websites or general information would be nice. Thanks.

Fred Noad’s "Solo Guitar Playing" Volume 1 is a great resource. You can buy a version with a CD so that you can be sure that what you’re doing is what’s intended! It’s hard to teach yourself – if you’re not sure how to do something, you can’t ask yourself what you’re doing wrong! Why not have occasional lessons just to keep yourself on the right path?

YouTube *can* be good, but there’s some awful rubbish up there too, and no way of knowing what’s good and what’s not.

I hope you enjoy what can be a wonderful hobby, either as a solo instrument or in a group.

What are some good classical music "compositions/songs" to listen to while driving?

March 19th, 2010 admin 2 comments

Note: I know absolutely nothing about classical music but I thought it would be cool and relaxing to listen to some good classical music in the car. I tried to find a good classical music radio station, and I found some, but I did not like their selection of classical music. If I had to describe what i like I would say something with "big" sound for example Ode to Joy maybe? Nothing with like a single violinist playing a solo for like 5 minutes. Anyway, thanks in advance!

Symphony No. 5 – Beethoven
Toccata and Fugue in D Minor – Bach
Hungarian Dances 5, 6, and 10 – Brahms
The Rite of Spring – Stravinsky (This is a very abstract piece. It may take some getting used to)
Piano Concerto No.1 – Tchaikowsky
Requiem – Mozart
Pictures at an Exhibition – Mussorgsky (This is originally a piano solo, but the more famous version is re-written for full orchestra by Ravel)
Requiem – Verdi
La Folia – Vivaldi
The Four Seasons – Vivaldi
