What are the different genres within country music?

March 31st, 2010 admin 5 comments

I’m doing a project on music and I chose country music. I need to know what the different types of genres are in country music. Sorry if the question doesn’t make sense! Thanks!

These are throughout history:
Cajun
Bluegrass
Rockabilly
Honky Tonk
Nashville Sound
Countrypolitan
"alt.country" (the stuff that’s "too country" for modern country radio)
Red Dirt
Country-rock (although, technically, "country" is an adjective for the word "rock")
Western swing
Western
Outlaw
Old-time (usually referring to the fiddle tunes of the 1920s and 30s)
Classic country
Traditional country (usually referring to the vocal acts of the 1920s and 30s)

Country Music Fans, Who is or was the most overrated man in country music?

March 29th, 2010 admin 10 comments

Past or Present, In your OPINION, what man do you think received the most undeserved attention, awards, etc in country music, and WHY?

I’ll probably get slapped for this, but for me it’s Kenny Rogers.Outside of Lucille and Gambler the guy wasn’t country. He started off in rock then came to country, then went to pop.Islands in the stream made me gag as much then as it does today..Then him and Sheena Easton killed a great Bob Seger song. I just always seen him as a phony inside and out..

And Billy Ray Cryus.Do I really need to say why? lol

What is the country music video by a female performer that shows her dad replacing pic in her guitar case?

March 27th, 2010 admin 1 comment

I’m looking for an old country music video sang by a female singer is singing in a sort of bar. Her dad watches her performance without her knowing (it seems) and he goes backstage and he sees an old picture, but he is missing from the picture (only the singer and her mom are in it), so he takes the picture and replaces it with the same picture (except he is in it, too) before leaving.
Thank you to whoever is able to help! <3

"Daddy Laid The Blues On Me" is the title.
The artist is Bobbie Cryner.

Her video is available on YouTube.

How did country and folk music diverge from their common source of Hillbilly music?

March 25th, 2010 admin 2 comments

I was wondering if you could offer any insight into how country music and folk music diverged from the common source of hillbillly music.

What would you say were the differences between them?

thx a bunch for any input!!

Hillbilly music wasn’t country music. It was the music of the Scots-Irish. When they came from Ireland, they couldn’t bring their instruments, so they had to create their music with new American instruments.

Today’s country comes from the Gospel and Blues tradition mixed with the Scots-Irish tradition.

I’d also like to point out that Hillbilly is a derogative term that some people, ie me, take offense to.

Why are there no african americans country music singers?

March 23rd, 2010 admin 12 comments

I know about charley pride but not many others. Why is this? There’s a lot of african americans in the south so why no country music?

To answer this accurately would require studies of thousands of thousands of people and demographics, but I would say the most likely factors to the lack of African American artists in country music is related to a few factors:

It could have to do with the African American performers themselves with more interest in the blues, jazz, and cajun styles. It could be dependent on the areas in which such potential performers live (in a urban southern area, one might be less likely to hear or enjoy country music as one would in a rural area). Or it may be that segregation and prejudices in the earlier part of the past century lead to a lower over all percentage of African American singers.

This is only theoretical, not really substantiated.

Aaron Tippin — Country Music Singer — American Patriot

March 23rd, 2010 admin 8 comments

Aaron Tippin — Country Music Singer — American Patriot

Tippin began performing in local honky tonks in the 1970’s. He competed on the TNN show “You Can Be A Star” in 1985 landed a songwriter’s contract and moved to Music City in 86. Always a focused and purposeful man, Aaron created a work routine that was spartan in it’s intensity. He worked the midnight shift at a factory in Kentucky, commuted to Music Row to write songs, did his late afternoon strength training, went to bed, got up and did the whole routine over again, day after day. The dedication paid off. He won barbell competitions, and Charley Pride, David Ball, Mark Collie and others recorded his songs.

Tippin performed his first Nashville nightclub show in 1990, and it earned him a contract with RCA. His ambitious first single “You’ve Got to Stand for Something” cracked the Top 10 in 1991, and 1992’s “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong With the Radio” stayed at No. 1 for three weeks. Tippin scored string of Top 10 hits for RCA. (In all, he charted 19 songs for the label.) Five of his RCA albums went gold and one platinum. He moved to Lyric Street in 1998 and charted a No. 1 with the raucous “Kiss This” (co-written with wife Thea) in 2000.

In the wake of 9/11, his patriotic anthem “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly” touched a nation. Performing for Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan has become a tradition for Aaron. The past several years during the Thanksgiving holiday, he and band have traveled for the purpose of performing for our brave soldiers. “Every time we go over there they always tell me what a blessing it is for me to come and perform for them,” says Tippin. “It’s more of a blessing for me than they’ll ever know.” While touring in the U.S., Tippin regularly donates his time performing for charities and special events that honor the U.S. military. He is also the spokesman for the Paralyzed Veterans of America and for the Armed Services YMCA.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Aaron puts as much time and energy into planning his live shows today, as he did back in 1985 when he just wanted to be heard. The Hit filled concert is constantly changing and evolving into a fresh show each year for the audience’s. Fans love the music and appreciate Aaron’s friendly nature in always taking time to meet each one of them after every show. Concert promoter’s are always surprised by his hard work ethic and willingness to assist in interview’s, radio station contest’s and concert marketing.

On top of being one of the greatest performers to hit the country music scene, Aaron also has many other talents. He became a commercial pilot at the age of 17. He owns 4 planes and is also a helicopter pilot. He is an avid hunter and spends personal time with his boys, teaching them how to hunt, fish and enjoy the great outdoors.

And don’t think his talents end there, you can add welder, truck driver, body builder, and wine maker to the list. Yes wine maker! Aaron has his own winery and is constantly creating different types of wine. He and Thea love to visit wineries when he has time off.

Hits include:
You’ve Got to Stand for Something”
“There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong With the Radio”
“I Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way”
“My Blue Angel”
“Working Man’s P.H.D.”
“The Call of the Wild”
“Whole Lotta Love On The Line”.
“I Got It Honest”
“She Feels Like a Brand New Man Tonight”
“That’s As Close As I’ll Get To Loving You”
“For You I Will”
“Kiss This”
“Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagle Fly”

What would you recommend for a country music collection?

March 21st, 2010 admin 3 comments

I’m buying a cd online for a friend who has a passing interest in the classic country music songs. She’s isn’t a fanatic, but she enjoys the oldies and pop tunes like ‘Stand by your man’. If people could help me pick out a cd that has nothing but those classic songs, I’d appreciate it very much.

Thanks all!

The one Tex recommended is good. Also try the Time-Life site, they have lots of compilation CD’s. www.timelifemusic.com

How can I become a lyricist for country music?

March 19th, 2010 admin 6 comments

I write lyrics and many people like them. How can I make it to country music? My wife loved them and i would love for them to get noticed by country artist and I want to become a lyricist. I have it natural but is it possible to do this without knowing instruments i mean the songwriter does that part but does the lyricist have to know too??

I’m not trying to be rude or anything but if you have to ask how to be a country songwriter then you can’t be a country songwriter. Country lyrics are written from the heart.
