How to compose a piece of jazz music for alto saxophone?(Serious answers only!)?

March 29th, 2010 admin 1 comment

For band class we have to do 2 projects for part of our grade, and I already have one done. But the other one I want to do is compose a piece of jazz music.
But I want to know:
What sets jazz music apart for other music?
How to compose a peice of music?
Would you be able to give me an exaple of a name for a jazz tune?

Sorry I have so many questions but I hope you help me.

Research the twelve bar blues, this is a warm up exercise that big bands(stage bands, you know, the four trumpets, four trombones, 4sax, piano, string base and drums)use. Very easy to improvise to. Jazz bounces around a lot, using arpeggio jumps, minor 5ths and minor 7ths, and some chromatic runs as well. Use all the afore mentioned and you should come up with something that sounds pretty groovy. As for naming it….. Anything goes, mack the knife, old man mose, red rooster, moving to the country. All these are names of famous jazz songs. One of my friends, names songs after pets or friends. For example for the dog, Mishka Bop. lol, just do what you want.

What are some musicians/artists that do "acid jazz" or "energetic ambient" music?

March 25th, 2010 admin 6 comments

I used to go to a really nice club that played this cool music that they called "acid jazz". I loved it. It might even be considered "world music". I am trying to find out the names of some artists who play this kind of music, preferably something I can download from Limewire. I like laid back but with "light energy", kind of jazz music. Something upbeat but laid back at the same time. I call it "vacation music" b/c when I listen to it, it is very relaxing.

Here is a list of Acid Jazz and eccentric world music you would enjoy:

African Headcharge
Blacknuss Allstars
Dread Flimstone and Michael Prophet
Emperors New Clothes
Goldbug
Gregory Isaacs
Mariela Johnson
Mister Exe
Mother Earth
Nu Perspective
Raw Stylus
Rose Windross
Skunkhour
Snowboy
吉田兄弟

I personally like Weather Report during the years Jaco Pastorius was playing bass for them. But some may argue that it’s not technically Acid Jazz. It’s still worth hearing since Jaco is still considered one of the most influential and genre altering bass players of our time.

Hope this helps

how many beats are there in jazz music?

March 21st, 2010 admin 3 comments

I want to write a dance poem to a jaunty, fast jazz-y rhythm, in order to be more precise, I would like to know how many beats are there in jazz music?

Most jazz is either 2/4 or 4/4 time. There are some jazz waltzes 3/4 time and some other time signatures are experimented with all the time. Dave Brubecks Time Out(Take Five) is probably the best known.

Does anyone know where to find jazz music for a small ensemble?

March 19th, 2010 admin 1 comment

Me and some friends are going to start up a jazz ensemble, and we were wondering where to find jazz music at, after looking online, i couldn’t find anything. We might end up going to our local music center, and try their, but I thought I would check here first.
Our group is going to consist of about 2 trombones, maybe 3 trumpets, 1 tube (me), and a clarinet, or sax.
Jazz is a type of music, played by a brass ensemble(in this instance). I m not looking for a shoe site :P

Try www.sheetmusicplus.com they have a great selection of Jazz music

Why is it that rappers don’t use jazz sounds in their rap music anymore?

March 17th, 2010 admin 6 comments

I remember when jazz music was always used in rap. I don’t hear that anymore. Rap music doesn’t sound the same anymore.

Actually, there are way more hip hop artists incorporating jazz into their music nowadays than ever. Jazz hip hop is one of the largest alternative subgenres of hip hop.

For instance, this album just came out a few months ago and is as good as any jazz hip hop record I’ve heard.

You just have to know where to look.

What are the different types of jazz music?

March 14th, 2010 admin 3 comments

I love some jazz music but I just hate some of it too, especiially when the horns keep toot-tooting the same phrase over and over and the drums are going on and on. I like slow jazz and jazz that plays with familiar melodies. I’d like to know the names of all types of jazz so I can narrow the kind I like and avoid the other. Thanks

Hope this can help !!!
