Where can I find some good live music tonight July 3rd in NYC?

March 10th, 2010 admin 1 comment

Its holiday week. Everyone has the 4ht off. So I’m trying to find a place for the 3rd to hang out at. A bar or lounge that has good live music either in Brooklyn or Manhattan, with affordable drinks. Nothing too big, something that brings a decent crowd with decent music, rock/jazz/hip hop. Thanks.

SMALLS JAZZ ON CHRISTOPHER STREET THE BEST!

What is the best compact digital camera to use at live music concerts and gigs?

March 4th, 2010 admin 2 comments

Hello,

Looking for help with a decision on purchasing a new compact camera.

I’m a rock concert promoter / organizer and avid live music fan and am always keen to try and capture great moments at different shows. Even though the live band shots are my main priority, I also want an everyday camera that can fit into my jeans or jacket pocket for other occasions, hence the compact requirement.

My photography skill level is between beginner and intermediate. I am always finding tips on taking good shots and have tried to applied them. This has led me to gain little experience dealing with manual options on cameras, but always trying to change settings to try to get the best picture I can.

The main requirement I have in a camera is to be able to take good quality shots of live rock bands from two perspectives:
a) From within the crowd at a large festival
b) Right by the band in a small bar / pub

Other Requirements are fairly basic:
1. Image Stabilizer – Considering how difficult it is to keep my hands steady while in a crowd of thousands.
2. Optical Zoom of 5x, 6x, or higher – To be able to get as reasonably close a shot as I can.
3. Minimum Mega Pixels = 8MP – For Quality Purposes.
4. Decent Shot to Shot Time – To quickly take shots continuously
5. Decent Battery Life – As I will be away for long periods of time from an outlet to recharge. If necessary of course.

Now I am aware of the difficulties of taking shots of live bands as I have been doing so with compact cameras for a while now; mainly issues with lighting. Also aware of the limited capabilities with compact cameras. However, most of the photos are for personal use rather than professional. Still, it would be great to be able to have high end shots close to, if possible, professional level.

I’ve been doing research for a while and keep coming back to the Canon PowerShot A720 IS as a prime candidate. But some reviews mention that it is poor in low light scenarios (does this apply to nighttime outdoor festivals?) and has a slow Shot-to-Shot time. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100 is my second choice at the moment. The Canon G9 seems like a good choice but I’m anxious that the price of the camera is beyond my skill level.

Any help or tips are much appreciated. Hope to make a final decision soon as I am set travel in a few days.

Thanks.

Canon G9 is by far the best compact camera among photography enthusiasts, so if you can afford it, go for it. Otherwise I’ll recommend the Panasonic DMC-FZ28K, which is coming out this fall. It offers 10 megapixels of resolution, high quality lens, and a 18x zoom, perfect for getting in close when your not. Of course, compact cameras cant really compare to slrs in terms of image quality, so get one when your budget and skill level allows for it.

PA System to PC: How to record a live music session?

March 2nd, 2010 admin 2 comments

I am trying to record our live devotional music sessions each week using Audacity on a PC laptop. Our setup is pretty simple: we use a Behringer Xenyx 2442FX, 4 vocal mics (2 are used for instruments like harmonium and tabla), and 2 speakers.

I’m not quite sure how to connect my laptop to the mixer, and then use Audacity to record the live session. Could you please help me with this?

It is easy…just get a standard 3.5mm (headphone) to RCA cable:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

You can get these cables at Walmart or Radio Shack.

Connect the RCA ends to the mixer’s "tape output" and the 3.5mm end to the soundcard line input (blue connector).

The sound may not be the best because many sound cards are not that great. You may want to invest in a USB audio interface if you want great recordings. This is the one I have and it works great:

http://www.zzounds.com/item–LEXALPHA

It comes with software and has professional 1/4 inch inputs like your mixer.

I have that same mixer – great mixer!

Is it tacky not to have live music at a reception?

February 28th, 2010 admin 10 comments

I am on a tight budget for my wedding and I was wondering how tacky it would be to set up speakers at our reception instead of having a dj or live band? We are already paying for musicians at the ceremony and we really can’t afford a band for the reception. Also, if you have any other creative ideas for reception music I would love to hear them!

Not tacky at all.

We’re doing the same for our July wedding. Hiring a DJ was going to cost an upwards of $800! We’re renting all the equipment (speakers, amp, mics, etc) for $100! We’ll then hook it up to our pre-mixed iPod (with a varitey of hundreds of songs, pre-loaded just for the wedding).

Cheap, exactly what we need, a great system, and no annoying DJ!

Just make sure that if you have specific songs you need played, that someone can do that for you. We’ll be designating a family member to man the iPod for a few songs. The rest of the night it’ll be on shuffle.

Good luck!

What are some great places to go in Austin for live music/restaurants and quiet places for a romantic night?

February 26th, 2010 admin 2 comments

My boyfriend and I are taking a weekend trip down to Austin for a fun pre-engagement adventure and I’m really into music and the arts so I want to take him to some really fun and interesting places. What are some nice places to go that aren’t too much of the bar kind of scene but still have good live music and food?

Central Market on Lamar and 38th Street is low key and has food and music and is Austin. It is not the club scene. It is not quiet but you can take a romantic walk around the pond and find a cozy corner to canoodle in. The cool movie stars [Julia Roberts] stay at the "green and quaint" San Jose Hotel on South Congress and at the Four Seasons [Clint Eastwood] on the lake.
