Why does live music sound so much worse than studio recorded music?

February 22nd, 2010 admin 3 comments

I am not such a big fan of live music, some of it is good, but why is it that the studio recorded music sounds that much better? Do the singers, have a different way to vocalize???

sound engineers have control over the "room" the "space" and complete ability to mold and shape sound in that room, lots of takes, lots of layers, etc.

Live, they have to deal with the acoustics of a club or hall, noise, Its live, no alternate takes and less opportunity to layer the sound, especially when they are recording amplifiers or using open mics.

I want to record live music (guitar, vocals etc) using a portable digital device. What device is best to use?

February 16th, 2010 admin 3 comments

I used to use himd minidisc but it broke and would like to try digital. Its for recording my own acoustic music, not for recording live gigs if you know what i mean. I’ve seen their are lots of digital dictaphones but these are more for voice close up rather than the wide spectrum of sound from guitar, vocals, piano etc. Please can you recommend a portable digital recorder that will fit my requirements. Thankyou.

I have a Firepod by Presonus with recording software from Cubase. It’s like having a professional recording studio tied to your home computer.
If you care, I have a website at www.broadjam.com/bradschuman with examples of some recordings I’ve done with it….(hope this isn’t considered "spamming").

What type of digital recorder should I use for recording live piano music?

February 10th, 2010 admin 3 comments

I would like to record live music played on the grand piano. I need to know what type of equipment I need, hardware AND software. Not too expensive, less than $500.
I would like a portable system.

There are lots of options. How portable do you want it? Are you adding anything else or just piano? For starters, you could get what is called a field recorder. M-Audio makes one that’s in your price range. It is a self contained unit, about the size of a paperback book. It has a sterio mic built right into the top of it, records on to smart media cards, and can export the recording as an mp3 ready to burn on to a cd. Or you could get a smaller, self contained digital recorder for the $300- 400 range, add a $100 conderser mic (Behringer B-1, Shure PG81, Studio Projects makes a few in that range, MXL, ect.) and you’re in business. Other options are going computer based, which someone else covered. I’m not going in to that because I’m guessing your computer probably isn’t right next to your grand piano, so it could be a little more work to get that set up. I’m keeping it more portable. Where can I go out in Dallas with live music?

February 5th, 2010 admin 7 comments

Looking for somewhere to go in the North Dallas area (or Addison? Plano?) where there is live music that we can still talk during without shouting or feeling like we are being rude to the performers. Perhaps a restaurant, bar or coffee house? Looking for something older than college crowd. Most any genre of music is okay. Casual.

Thanks in advance!

The Shops at Legacy is a great place to hang…young but professional crowd. It’s in Plano. I have a link below. I’d go to Martini Park. It has live music. On their website it shows the menu, calendar of events, etc. Hope this works out for you!
