February 16th, 2010 admin 1 comment

how can i write a good album review.
what points should i include?
should i like write about each song or something?

PLEASE HELP!

-Listen to the album multiple times so you get a good feel for it.
-Take a stance on the album; how does it make you feel?
-Talk about similar bands/albums and how this album compares.
-Talk about previous albums by the band and how this album stacks up.
-Talk about its best tracks, choose a few of the ones that move you the most and describe them.
-Don’t forget to include basic info: Band name, album name and date released etc.
-Above all be honest in your opinion of the album

Does anyone know of any good massive music review databases like All Music Guide & Metacritic?

February 10th, 2010 admin 1 comment

I’m a review obsessive and love looking up albums in the All Music Guide’s crazily extensive review database, but I also want to hear some other opinions. I love Metacritic because it shows loads of different reviews, but their database is limited to stuff newly released in the last couple of years. I want to look up old 60s and 70’s stuff too!

Basically, does anyone know of anything like iMDB but for music instead of film?

try..iono about 60’s 70’s but check anyway….

Are there any plays that got bad reviews because of incidental music or bad stage design?

January 29th, 2010 admin 1 comment

I’m writing a paper for my english class about how incidental music can make or break a play. Specifically, the importance of music in A Streetcar Named Desire. I’m looking to use a play that got bad reviews because of details such as music, stage design, costumes, etc. as an example.

Thanks
Brittany

As an actor, I can tell you that it takes more than a good cast to make a good play.

Stage design, music, even lighting and sound cues or mic levels can make or ruin an otherwise good script and cast.

I’ve been in productions of Beauty and the Beast with a live orchestra, excellent costumes, and and amazing set and it was wonderful.

I’ve also seen the same show with taped music, home-brought costumes, minimal set…

A great cast can overcome the set, the lighting, and the costumes if the director is good.. but a weak cast with poor lighting, costumes, or casting is doomed if that overshadows the actors performances.

What people don’t realize is that the stage design, lighting, and music is just as important a part of a production as the actors.. they enhance the mood and flow of the play. If done poorly, they stop the motion and cause the audience to lose focus on what the actors are trying to convey on stage.

There’s a stage term called "pulling focus".. which means when you’re watching a play or movie.. and something in the background (lights / set / music).. makes you stop focusing on what the main characters in the scene are doing, and instead look at something else. That’s considered very bad in the industry and all shows try like hell to avoid that from happening…

Hope that helps…

Is there a site similar to Discogs(music reviews)?

January 26th, 2010 admin 1 comment

Hello guys,
can someone please tell me a site similar to Discog, where music reviews are posted regularly, BUT the music reviews are short, and focus on the singers vocals and instruments used!
Thanks

Maybe go to myspace forums? They always got something to say.

How do you get paid to write music reviews?

January 22nd, 2010 admin 3 comments

Does anyone know what a good site would be? Or any start at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.

I’m not really sure. I thought I saw a banner that they were looking for someone at allmusic.com, but it was a while ago and I don’t remember what it was for.
If you have a portfolio I would just go to various ones and inquire. If you don’t have one maybe do a blog and compile some material to have a body of work to submit. I imagine if you’re good enough they’ll figure they can never have too many. Also, by submitting reviews you may get some great feedback and critique.

Good luck! I’d love to do something like that, but I never had the knack for writing.

Why do people still read music album reviews?

January 16th, 2010 admin 1 comment

I’ve been reading a few album reviews and noticed that they are so biased…they’re based on personal preference and sometimes simply, if they like the artist or not.

Haha. Whenever we read something like a review or a blog, we take in the fact that it’s never factual – a lot of the time, it’s just an elaborated opinion about something. It’s interesting to see how people perceive the album, why they think this song is good, etc. but it should never stop someone from buying it if they really like the artist.

I mean, for me, reading an album review is just as useful as trying to get daily news from Perez Hilton. They’re going to be biased, but yes, people still read them. Why? To get a new perspective. Do people listen to them when the review tells them not to buy it? Probably not.
