How good do I have to be to play with other musicians?

March 25th, 2010 admin 1 comment

Im a decent player, Ive been playing for a year, I can play just about any riff. Im working on my soloing. I can’t improvise well, and I have trouble coming up with my own stuff. I still can improvise, and come up with my own stuff, just its not impressive.

Would I be good enough to play with other musicians?
*I play electric guitar

Oh WOW… you can play actual RIFFS… wow…. I’m so under whelmed.

If you think playing a few riffs is actually playing a guitar.. then you aren’t ready to play with adults yet.

I’ll just bet you have never had a music lesson and you have learned to play for free off the internet, because you sound like one of those delusional self taught and second rate guitar players I run into all the time.

Why do some rock musicians like to wear rosaries especially if they are NOT religious people?

March 21st, 2010 admin 6 comments

Many of these musicians have tattoos and behave in an outrageous manner, they are not your typical image of a devoted Catholic. Usually Catholics wear rosaries because they hold Catholicism and its ideals in high esteem. I do not understand why these musicians would wear these rosaries since wearing them sends out a strong message of ones religious affinity to the church. For us Catholics, wearing a rosary carries a strong significance and these reckless musicians contradict themselves by wearing an object which represents the complete opposite of how they handle themselves.

While some see wearing rosaries and other religious items as a fashion statement or to show contradiction to religion, many see the religious items as amulet to protect from evil/evil eye.

Is it important for musicians to study Music History?

March 17th, 2010 admin 6 comments

What is it’s ultimate purpose? We study theory to better understand how music is structured, and ultimatley to be able to write better music, we study our instruments (or voice) to develop technical proficiency. Why is it important for all musicians to understand musical history on some level?

I may be WAY out in left field on this but music is based on emotional feelings. It helps us to know the setting of the times of the writers of the music in order to understand their emotions. That way it enables US to find the emotional background to the music that we are listening or playing to or singing. When we can "empathize" with the composer’s emotional state during which the composition was assembled then we can appreciate the nuances of the music itself. Anyone can play the notes as written and it’ll sound just fine. But when you can put the emotions of the composer into the music then it just seems to have the extra energy added to it and it somehow sounds much better. We can especially see this with vocalists as they seek for and finally find the emotions of the lyrics and music that they are singing. Once they find those emotions it just comes out in the subtle nuances of vocal inflection and body language and facial expression. A really excellent recording doesn’t even need the physical aspects at all, you can get ALL of the emotion directly from the vocalists tonal qualities.

Brightest Blessings,

Which program at the musicians institute should my friend take?

March 14th, 2010 admin 2 comments

She is equally interested in both the recording engineering program and the Music Video, Film and Television program and will probally take both eventually. Which should she take first? Which one has more jobs that pay more money? She is only interested in going to the musicians institute in hollywood california.

She should ask the money question at the institute./

What are some other musicians similar to Joe Satriani?

March 13th, 2010 admin 3 comments

Alright I’m a big Satriani fan and am wondering what others musicians have a similar sound to him. Obviously no one can sound exactly like him, but just in general. I’ve already listened to Steve Vai and Eric Johnson so. Any input would be much appreciated thanks!

Paul Gilbert is great. both his solo stuff and Racer X.
John Petrucci’s solo is good too.
Buckethead is another awesome guitarist and is very prolific.
Get some G3 vids they are great.
you could try Yngwie Malmsteen but he is more classical based.

How many popular musicians actually write their own songs?

March 10th, 2010 admin 5 comments

Just out of curiosity… How many popular musicians write their own music? And I don’t mean the lyrics- composing the actual song. In other words, is it common for bands or artists to have songs written for them by other people?

It kind of bothers me that stars like britney spears are just handed the music track and lyrics, and make millions of dollars from it. IKD, just my opinion.

ususally, bands compose and write their own songs but the pop singers are too good for that and pay someother people to do it.
its complete shite of course, considering that the majority of thehuman population listens to the people that dont write or composetheir own stuff.
argh.
i hate this generation.

Which bands/musicians actually come up with ideas for their music videos and records?

March 8th, 2010 admin 2 comments

I’ve noticed that in music today, it’s VERY rare that an artist will already have some ideas for their music videos and album artwork.

For example, I know that Kurt Cobain would already have fully developed ideas for Nirvana’s music videos. How often does that kind of thing happen in today’s music? And can you list some bands/musicians who still do this?

I know that Green Day still make their own music and everything…but, I think this days almost nobody cares how will the song sound, they just care how will they look on the music video just like Beyonces and Lady Gagas song Video Phone…Try to listen first just to the song and then see the video…The song is awful, but the video!!!

What software do musicians use to make their own music?

March 6th, 2010 admin 2 comments

What do musicians like Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, and William Control use for making their own music? I’m in a punk band but I have my own songs that are slow and more Nine Inch Nails than punk. Something where I can make beats and add different effects and add my voice. Not hip hop though. Thanks!

One of the good beat making programs is Sonic Producer. You can make all kind of beats really easily and it’s not expensive. Check this site.

March 4th, 2010 admin 4 comments

You are right on!! I am sure it’s coming soon if Yahoo is paying attention.

How do I obtain press credentials / ability to interview musicians and publish the interviews?

March 2nd, 2010 admin 1 comment

I’m puting together a website with a friend, and we want to interview bands / bandmembers as they pass through town. Also we would like to request phone interviews through whomever is representing them, and publish them on the site. These are NOT huge names, or people you would hear on the radio. More cult following type musicians from the industrial genre. What kind of certifications, licenses, or anything do we need to acquire to be able to do that?

I’m a journalist major in Chicago- this stuff is hard work but definitely worth it. You don’t need any particular licenses or anything. You just need to get in contact with the band- go to their website or whatever and see if they have a manager or someone you can call. Some smaller bands will list phone numbers for booking purposes too, so you could try that number. Most small bands would love the publicity and will probably be pretty open. You then just need to set up interviews with the band and be up front that you are considering publishing the answers to your questions.
