What do you think about musicians acting political?

January 31st, 2010 admin 2 comments

You know from "musicians" telling people they should volunteer, get connected and giving their stance on the stimulus.

I LIKE IT. I think EVERYBODY should be able to express their opinion about the political system… (this is supposed to be a gov’t for the people by the people)… I REJECT people who think only certain people should be able to talk about issues… that is ridiculous to me.

How do I find musicians for a charity concert?

January 29th, 2010 admin 1 comment

Good Morning, We run a camp for kids with special medical needs (Camp Tuolumne Trails) near Yosemite National Park. We are trying to put on a fundraiser concert for camperships but don’t have a good idea of how you could find musicians for this. Does anyone have any tips, advice, or websites with information. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Post an advertisement in the newspaper, as well as on Craigs List. Or just word of mouth if anyone knows a band or musician who is willing to play.

What separates the greatest musicians from the rest?

January 22nd, 2010 admin 2 comments

(Talking mainly about pianists) – Why are there only these (relatively) few musicians who are internationally renowned? Surely their level of playing can be matched by far more people?

Only some musicians have the ability to capture people. Sure, you can play your songs, but if with it there’s a significance, certain performing style, the entire thing. It’s a matter of truly showing meaning to people who can relate. People build you up a reputation for that, and it only gets bigger.

Is there any great musicians or players started their playing very late then made their ways?

January 16th, 2010 admin 2 comments

I mean after 20 or something. If there’s no such great musicians ,do u know any guys like this in ur real life?

I know passion is one thing but I just wanna know how big u can make it if u start play really late.

well the best example i can give to you is…

The Arctic Monkeys

if your American then i don’t know if you will know them because i don’t know how big there are there but if your British i’m sure you have heard of them, one of the very top bands around at the moment being described as musical genious

Now this band is made up of two 22 year old’s and two 23 year olds. They formed in 2002 and are first came to fame in 2005 when they started to really get noticed and go on there way to fame.

so why does this relate to you, you my ask simply..

when this band formed they only had around6 months of playing experience and the durmmer had never played before but with a bit of hard work in 3 shorts years they had a record label and were everywhere

so they might not have been over 20 but they still became huge in a very small period of time, an example to us all budding musicians =p

What software do musicians use to mix and edit their music?

January 13th, 2010 admin 3 comments

Musicians and DJs can mash certain songs together. They can completely eliminate the vocals or the music from a song. I’ve used Adobe Audition and this program is unable to do that. What is the best music editing software for purchase?

Its a common misconception that people think it’s possible to eliminate vocals from a track. That is not possible unless you have the original song, and you have the acapella version of the song (you need the acapella to cancel out the vocals in the original track). You cant just take vocals out of a track without it, so there is no program that does that. The way we do it is we invert one track, which cancels out the vocals of the other track when played together. It doesnt actually take the vocals off the track, it just creates a whole new track without the vocals. Once something is recorded to something, its permanent unless you’re the one that recorded it there and can undo your edit. Acapellas are released by the studios where they were originally recorded, and the same can be said about instrumentals (beats) without vocals. Its possible to make acapellas, but you need the original and the instrumental track…just like you need the acapella and the original to make an instrumental track.
The most common software that majority of studios have is Pro Tools. I have Pro Tools (digi 002) and I have FL Studio. FL Studio is extremely cheap, and its not used by as many professionals as Pro Tools, but in my experience it’s just as good when it comes to composing. But when it comes to recording, Pro Tools is still king. Now when it comes to mashing certain songs together, most pros use Pro Tools with a program called Reason. Some use other programs like Nuendo. I use Acid Pro for this or Audacity (free program). It’s just a matter of preference when it comes to mashing songs together or creating remixes.

How do I find musicians in my area?

December 2nd, 2009 admin 6 comments

I just dropped out of college for violin because I realized I wasnt going to make any money in it but still would love to do it as a serious hobby. My favorite form is quartet, but I have one big problem…I am only one of what should be four. I need a first (or second) violin, a viola, and a cello in Florissant MO area(near stl). If anyone on here would like to join me, or if you know of a better way to look for musicians, please let me know.

Advertise on Craig’s list, and put notes on bulletin boards at local libraries and colleges and music stores.

Why do musicians prefer for the 5th chord in the minor scale to be major?

November 8th, 2009 admin 2 comments

Why do musicians write songs where the 5th chord (or V chord) is major rather than minor? Why not Am, Dm, Em? Why Am, Dm, E7? Is there some "better flavor" to using E7 instead of Em? And why isn’t the G# for that chord included in the key signature? It would be better if the sharp was included in the key signature instead of having to write it every time it is used. Why not?

This is because the V chord in major has the leading tone: say we’re in C Major, a V chord would have G B D. The B, the third, is the leading tone to C. The B is only a half step from C and wants to move to C. In a minor key, the leading tone isn’t there. Say we are in C natural minor. That would mean that it is Bb instead of B. This Bb is a whole step from C and doesn’t want to resolve quite as much. When you raise that Bb to a B natural, it sounds like it wants to go up, giving a song a sense of direction.
As for why is the G# in A minor not written in the key signature, there are a few reasons. The best is that It is common practice that the sharps and flats in a key signature will follow the same order. If you see three flats in a key signature, you will know what they will be, Bb, Eb, and Ab. If there is one sharp you know that it will be F#. There are also some music theory reasons: A musician (one that has been well trained in Tonal Harmony and Tonal Theory) will see that G# and can see how it fits into the music. In a group, they would be able to know how it fits in with a chord and to tune it properly. This is because in a chord, you have to tune a note differently than in a scale or a melody. The third of a chord will be a little lower than it would be if you were playing it in a scale.

Finally, if you are writing a song, do what sounds good. Music Theory was only invented after composers had been writing what they thought sounded good for many centuries. If you think a song will sound better without the raised third in a V chord, then try it out. If it sounds good to you, use it. If it doesn’t, maybe try something else.

Rock On, music lovers, Rock on.
