Just because you sing country music and you didn't live on a farm or whatever, doesn't mean you're a phony. Let people sing country if they really want to, even if they're from a big city.. Where you come from doesn't really matter, all that matters is if you truly, really passionate about singing country music.

Billy Ray Cyrus – his song Achy Breaky Heart was not country and now he has pushed his daughter to sing but she doesn’t sing country either.
Caveman is right also – Kenny Chesney isn’t what you would call a traditional country singer.

Rascal Flatts is another phony – he is a rock singer.

kenny chesney (though i still like him…)

however… country is kind of a catch-all. it’s the genre that can talk about pretty much anything, and who will accept anyone, no matter their background or previous gig. they have to have somewhere to go, after all. so there’s probably not a way to stop the fakes.

When it comes to country living,I think most of the names already mentioned at least lived in the country growing up.I'm going to go with Shania Twain.Something tells me she didn't do much work on the farm in Windsor Canada

I’m going to have to back the person who said "all of them."

WHY: Most of the people performing, producing, packaging, programming, and — sadly — purchasing country music today could not tell Hank Williams from Vanessa Williams or George Jones from Grace Jones. Bill Anderson said in an interview in 1992, "They (modern country performers) all claim to be George Jones fans. I don’t know if they say that because they are, or because they think it’s the expedient thing to say." It’s the latter, Bill. Elvis Costello, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee who was a punk pioneer, knows more George Jones songs than most of the country artists today. (Proof: he recorded an obscure Jones song, "Brown to Blue," on "Almost Blue." Find one of these "George Jones fans" who can name a song like "Old Brush Arbors," "Milwaukee Here I Come," or some other obscure Jones song as their favorite! No, they’re all going to say "He Stopped Loving Her Today" because it’s the only song of his they know.) Now, ask them what their favorite EAGLES song or favorite LYNYRD SKYNYRD song is, and they can rattle off those obscure album tracks! (NO, folks, the Eagles ARE NOT COUNTRY. "Life in the Fast Lane" isn’t a country song, not even by today’s horribly watered-down definition!)

I include the fans in this list of phonies. Why? Because they say things like, "Oh, I hate that old ‘whiny, twangy’ stuff." Hey, that IS country music. If you hate it, then you hate country music. Don’t try to fool yourself. If you had an ounce of integrity you’d demand that they call this pop/rock stuff what it is. That way everyone would be happy: you won’t be stigmatized with the label "country music fan" and we can have our music back.

He was picked from Nashville Execs who wanted to prove a point!!!!
(That looks sell Records)!!!(?)
After he had a few(!!!) real country sounding songs, he started doing his "Island Sounding Songs"!!!

Yes, he wins Awards, (to an Obscure World, that has no IDEA he really can’t play Guitar)!!!!!!!!!!!

and it opened doors to Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, (who can sing, just not Country)!!!!

I’ll get off my Soapbox, but Country Music Deserves RESPECT!!!!!!
