Is it tacky not to have live music at a reception?

I am on a tight budget for my wedding and I was wondering how tacky it would be to set up speakers at our reception instead of having a dj or live band? We are already paying for musicians at the ceremony and we really can’t afford a band for the reception. Also, if you have any other creative ideas for reception music I would love to hear them!

Not tacky at all.

We’re doing the same for our July wedding. Hiring a DJ was going to cost an upwards of $800! We’re renting all the equipment (speakers, amp, mics, etc) for $100! We’ll then hook it up to our pre-mixed iPod (with a varitey of hundreds of songs, pre-loaded just for the wedding).

Cheap, exactly what we need, a great system, and no annoying DJ!

Just make sure that if you have specific songs you need played, that someone can do that for you. We’ll be designating a family member to man the iPod for a few songs. The rest of the night it’ll be on shuffle.

Good luck!

It isn’t tacky in the least. In fact, I haven’t been to any wedding where there was live music, and I’ve been to two very ritzy weddings. I’ve been to one wedding where an iPod or pre-made CDs were used, and no one thought any less of the couple. Music is music afterall =]

Not at all! DJs are a lot of fun, if you get the right one! Our’s even acts as a "day of" wedding planner – making sure everything is where its supposed to be at the right times, and what not!

Not tacky at all and the music will probably be much better and more varied than you would be able to get from a band.

There is nothing wrong with doing your own music.
This way you get to pick the music you enjoy. The way technology is with lap tops and Ipod it’s easy to be your own DJ.

If you have a wedding website or have a wedding group on a social networking site get your friends to share their favourite songs with you. Then add them to your play list.

I dont think anyone Needs live music at the reception. We just made some cd’s and played them. I havent ever been to a wedding reception that had a live band so I dont see it being a big deal at all.
Sorry I dont have any creative ideas for the music, other than having a microphone up and telling people if they feel the need to get up and sing then they could do that.

There is nothing wrong with playing your own music. In reality I think live bands are an over priced option, because every wedding band I have seen will play about five songs and take a 30 minute break. Then play another 5 songs and take another break. During the break they play music CD’s which you can do yourself. Bands are also terrible MC’s. They usually don’t do any introduction of events and expect you to do them yourself. Good DJ’s on the other hand are working all event long. They are either selecting music, mixing music, coordinating events with the venue or introducing events. Yes, some DJ’s may be over priced also, but if you shop around I’m sure you can find a cheap one. Go to http://www.advancedvideo.50webs.com they do wedding video, photo & DJ and the last time I was at their web site the DJ prices were really good.

Not at all. I’ve been to plenty of weddings where there was a DJ and the music wasn’t live. I have heard a new trend where people make a play list for their ipod with a few hundred songs. They set it to shuffle or a specific list.
