What are some great places to go in Austin for live music/restaurants and quiet places for a romantic night?

My boyfriend and I are taking a weekend trip down to Austin for a fun pre-engagement adventure and I’m really into music and the arts so I want to take him to some really fun and interesting places. What are some nice places to go that aren’t too much of the bar kind of scene but still have good live music and food?

Central Market on Lamar and 38th Street is low key and has food and music and is Austin. It is not the club scene. It is not quiet but you can take a romantic walk around the pond and find a cozy corner to canoodle in. The cool movie stars [Julia Roberts] stay at the "green and quaint" San Jose Hotel on South Congress and at the Four Seasons [Clint Eastwood] on the lake.

There’s so many venues here it’s hard to tell you without knowing what kind of music you like. But, I’ll give you some recommendations..

Elephant Room – quaint old underground place with live jazz music every night and some nice beers on tap. It’s downtown on Congress and 2nd.

Club DeVille and The Mohawk – both places have mostly local and underground bands from softer indie to punk. they are both downtown in the Red River district (music district) near Red River and 9th.

Headhunters – place to go to see a good heavy metal show

Red 7 – mostly hardcore punk and rock

Emo’s – usually bigger bands play here. it’s a favorite because there is Emo’s inside and Emo’s outside joined by a courtyard with picnic tables. So, if you pay the cover at one, you get into both. There’s a good mix of music that plays here.

Beerland and Red Eyed Fly – smaller bands of all types play here, a lot of local acts as well but a slightly different crowd than Mohawk and DeVille.

You can pretty much go anywhere downtown and see live music and eat at resturants. Almost every restaurant downtown is a local Austin place. Also check out the Barton Springs Rd. area for some great Austin original restaurants. Romeo’s is awesome for a romantic dinner and they often have live italian music.

For quiet, I’d suggest either going to a steakhouse downtown ($$$) or getting out of downtown. If you drive to the west side (Loop 360 or further) you can find some quiet spots to park your car and look at the hill country. It’s generally pretty quiet out west away from the city.
