Why cant successful music artists represent countries in the Eurovision?

Say, Lily Allen or some other British music artist. Why can’t they represent us? I mean Abba did and we won. Is there some rule about how famous the singer can get?

Because they’d automatically win, it would be too easy and a bit one sided. It’s like getting professional footballers to play against a team off people who only just discovered football yesterday

I think all they have to do is participate in the process by which they choose who goes and get chosen.

Do you think they’d WANT to?
I mean, think about it, the Eurovision is fairly terrible. The standard of music is pathetic. Why would they want to degrade their music like that?
