What does a person need to consider before opening a small business, specifically a night club?
I am considering opening a night club in a medium sized Midwest market. I need any advice I can get, especially things I might not have considered. Any and all relevant comments are welcome.
the very first thing is the zoning
you cant be within certain distance from schools, churches etc
another thing to remember is that liquor license are very expensive; your insurance will be expensive as well because of the liability that you must cover

liquor licenses are REALLY expensive!
sound pollution if you have neighbors!
zoning laws & how late you are able to stay open!

Location would be the first thing to consider, you want a high traffic area but not in the hood, and you will need to check the zoning laws, because I’m sure you will be selling alcohol and that affects where you can have a night club

I have owned a Bar in my long life, and I must tell you, it was the biggest pain in the butt I have ever had.
I am assuming you are young, because an older person would not be willing to deal with drunks.
Trust me, it will get old very fast. And I was making good money. I still hated it .

Consider these factors: Location – Area Population Density – Compettion – Cost and Expenses. Do some market research on the area. Do some "competitive" intelligence gathering so that you dont go into it blindly. Alot of ideas sound good on paper, but when the research is done, it can fall apart real quick. Get some practical business expertise in areas like planning, marketing, management and financing

Great question, but there’s not enough space in this column for the answer!
Here are my top five for you:
1/ Write a proper business plan. This means doing excellent market research that will help you to determine viability. Assume nothing, do your homework, and write a great plan.
2/ Secure more than enough cash. Cash is king in any business, but especially so in the nightclub industry. It will be easy to burn through tons of it, so make sure you start with deep pockets, and manage your expenses well.
3/ Spend some time working in a nightclub and see if you enjoy the lifestyle from the other side of the bar. It looks like fun when you’re drinking there, but it can be a TON of work. I’m not saying it’s not rewarding, just know what you’re getting in to. If you can’t find a similar place to work in, see if you can find a mentor who can help to walk you through the rough patches of your start-up.
4/ When choosing your location, find the RIGHT location, not necessarily the CHEAPEST location. Too many people make this mistake.
5/ Hire great people who will match your attitude and energy. When you are creating an experience in your club, so much of it comes down to the people who are working there. You can train someone to serve a drink, but you can’t change someone’s bad attitude.
Hope these help! Best of luck with your new business – cheers.
